Manual Transmission June 2007
Technical Service

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT
Service Action: Replace SMG Hydraulic Unit Electric Motor on M5 Vehicles

MODEL
E60 M5 with S85

SITUATION
Carbon brushes of the electric motor for SMG hydraulic system may wear prematurely. This condition may cause a failure of the motor, resulting in insufficient hydraulic system pressure.

Fault codes related to low hydraulic pressure will be stored in SMG control unit (e.g. 4F42, 4F43, 4F40), and a transmission warning will be displayed in the Check Control. Gears may not be selected or changed. If SMG transmission is stuck in any gear, the engine can not be restarted.

Customers will be mailed letters notifying them of the need to have the work in the Service Action performed. A copy of the customer notification letter is attached.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves M5 vehicles with S85 engines which were produced from 01/25/2005 up to 01/23/2006.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

Model Chassis Number Range

M5 B581047 – B582710

CORRECTION
On the affected vehicles, replace the electric motor of the SMG hydraulic pump according to instructions provided (RA 23 42 020).

Long as mine does not get stuck in Calabasas, I'm Good.

Hey Bear, Herr BMW just called me. He said that it pertains to those individuals who only drive their V10's in auto mode. Those that actually shift the way SMG is meant can disregard the notice.
