View Full Version : Great SA, not so great Tech

Took my 6er in for an oil change and to have the brakes looked at last week. Emailed my SA and told him I'd be there in 20 minutes. Get there and the place is packed with people dropping off cars. They've apparently committed all the loaners except the 335 My SA hands me the keys for. After he finishes up with his appointment, we go over what the keyfob says I need, and the list is fairly long for things to look at. I take off and thoroughly enjoy the 335 in DS mode.

Side note - the drivers space is fantastic; I didn't remember liking it that much the first time, but this was the couple rather than the 4 door. Seemed like the back seat has as much room as my 6er on top of that...

Pick up the 6er the following afternoon; turns out all the checklist items are in range except the oil, so I'm good to go. Will have another service in early October before ToD for tires and SMG fluid change, and probably new pads and fluids. Friday morning (next day), I'm headed to the office and flip through the display to see fuel range. Flash past the oil and it shows the +1 qt symbol. (I am pretty sure I had checked it right after leaving the dealer and it showed full.) I'm thinking the worst; got to the office and did a BC quick check, and still got the +1 qt. Called my SA and asked him what he thought, we agreed I'd add half a quart and monitor it. That half quart went in 140 miles ago, and I'm still reading 3/4 of the reserve quart now. SA is convinced that the tech just didn't add enough oil and says they go by what the computer tells them (not sure if that's an actual measurement taken while interfaced with my car or through the regular modes a driver can see or if that simply means the computer says "Add 8.3 qts" and the instructions are wrong.) He did say they've had similar issues with other Ms, and I'm thinking someone just needs to pay a little more attention.

Anyway, glad it's not a bad ring or something that would require major overhaul. Looking forward to the ToD next month - can't wait to see those West Coast Slackers if they really show up!

...says they go by what the computer tells them (not sure if that's an actual measurement taken while interfaced with my car or through the regular modes a driver can see or if that simply means the computer says "Add 8.3 qts" and the instructions are wrong.)

That reminds me of something an experienced doc told me years ago when I was doing that thing...treat the patient and not the chart.

Very good point.

FYI - I got a survey like I always do after the trip; told the SA I'd give it all top marks (and did) but wanted him to look into the oil issue to make sure it doesn't happen again. Turns out that survey only impacts the SA; not the tech that did the work. Something to think about when responding to those things.

Yeah, I need to take my M to the shop and have them check all the fluids and brakes before TOD. I'm 10,000 mi from another inspection and she feels great, but I'm still on the original rear brakes (65,000 miles!) and original battery. I just feel like the car is a ticking time bomb.
