Are you refering to Techno Violet like the M3? I think the 850 is black with just reflections of the surroundings.
I actually considered an 840i as my first BMW. I was looking at the 540i in '97 or early '98. One dealer had a '97 840i at a closeout price. It was only $5k more than the 540i. But interestingly, the 540i had better gearing, a lower weight, and was quicker, so I went for it but waited for the '99 models.
