Our member Norbert apparently did not dare to bring the bad news to this forum personally, so I'll jump in:
http://www.bmwgroup.com/e/nav/index.html?http://www.bmwgroup.com/e/0_0_www_bmwgroup_com/investor_relations/corporate_news/news/2008/PM_Q2_2008.html

And here's the relevant section:
The BMW Group will continue to optimise its sales strategy in the light of changed market conditions. The company intends to retain its position as the world’s leading premium manufacturer in the future. This is only possible through growth. Sales volume growth, however, will not be pursued at the expense of profitability. In the light of the ongoing weakness of the US dollar and market, sales volumes will be reduced in the USA on a targeted basis as part of a new strategy for this region. Some of the vehicles originally intended for sale in the USA will be switched from the US dollar region to countries with higher margins. The BMW Group’s US sales volume figures for 2008 are therefore likely to be lower than one year ago. The emphasis is also being placed on profit-oriented growth in other regions.

Our member Norbert is too busy doing exactly just that: deliverying shareholder value (mainly to the Quandts though).

While this will help BMW retain their value due to a higher demand I'm afraid the lines after the bolded text imply that the US will be lower on the list to receive model updates and newer models that we've been waiting for.

With the requirements of alternative fuels and the decrease in the US dollar and decrease in sales and resale value, I can image that the US is a drain on BMW at this time. The good news is, we have a bunch of smart people at BMW who are looking to protect their franchises so they are around for a long time.

While it hurts to hear the words...it's not surprising.

I see another merger in the "near" future.

I wonder what Australia's margins are? Our economy isn't doing to bad for now, while some experts say she's sitting right on the edge before we go into a rescission:scared::ball:

Norbert said the other day that it is not going to be a quick turn around and that even 2009 is going to be lean for BMW. I expect some damage control and some alternate sources of income like Alfa's induction into the Mini dealers.

Just a little reminder what the bold text means:
A new M3 base model has a list price of approx. 100'000 US$ here in Europe (expect a 5-8% discount on that) while I've just googled an US MSRP of 56'500$.

I hope bmw are not heading down the road that Ford and GM are going down!

It seems to be a huge global down turn in the auto industry, even the mighty big T ( Toyota) has seen sales in many countrys head down.

I wish the US wouldn't drag every one down with it:greenlaff: :scared: :shake: :youbet:

I'm also addicted to Starbucks. I got a cafe mocha on the way to the Apple store yesterday and another one today at a Super Target. That makes 3 Starbucks in the same area but they are closing one.

yeah, they are closing about 600 nationwide

i can't believe they could saturate the market that way and last as long.
