First Spy Photos of the BMW X5 Hybrid

Yes, you read that right! This time the BMW X5 Hybrid has been spotted during some driving tests in California. With all the attention being focused on the X6 Hybrid, the X5 made its way into the spy photos.

The X6 Hybrid is very close to being released, but as of now, no official information on when the X5 Hybrid will make its North American debut. Maybe you're wondering how we know that the X5 in the spy photos is the actual hybrid version. Well, the notorious bulge on the hood that was spotted on the X6 models before, is a huge giveway. Now, there might be some of you that might say BMW was just testing an engine and nothing more. Ok, fair enough, but look at the next photo showing the rear of the car. Without zooming in, I can tell you what it says: "Caution! Hybrid-Prototype (High Voltage on Board) ". Pretty obvious, right?

At the Geneva Auto Show, the german luxury automaker unveiled the BMW X5 Twin-Turbo Diesel Hybrid, a Vision Efficient Dynamics Concept, powered by the previously mentioned twin-turbo 2.0 liter four cylinder diesel that's mated to a hybrid motor. The diesel engine produces 204 hp and 295 lb.-ft. of torque, but the addition of a compact generator increases power by another 20 hp and 154 lb.-ft. of torque. Power is sent through an eight-speed gearbox developed.

The friends at Xbimmers went into even more detail and examined the spotted X5 Hybrid even closer. Here is what was their conclusion:

The X6 hybrids spotted testing to date have all been petrol-based. We have yet to see this X5 hybrid fuel up, so we can't conclusively answer the gasoline/diesel question just yet. However, the small round exhaust tips on this prototype look closer to the standard X5 diesel exhaust rather than the larger, rectangular tips on the X5 3.0si. We'll be watching for a refueling session on this prototype to put the issue to rest.
