How important is BMW's new flagship 7-series saloon to the Bavarian motor works?
Well, take in the fact that the pre-launch press pack is 118 turgid pages long and that the car has no fewer than three separate driving launches and you'll get some idea that BMW is a) stung by criticism that its old fourth-generation model is dowdy and b) that it wants to put as much get-gone as possible between Chris Bangle's watered-down second-generation design and its "new unmistakable superior look". My, these Germans have a way with words.
Actually the new fifth-generation 7 is something of a looker, with lots of glass, a bit like BMW's Sixties Neue Klasse saloons, and svelte coachwork lines uninterrupted by Bangle bumps. In fact, it looks very like the old third-series car, which (as Peter Dron presciently remarked) is still one of the most handsome saloons around.
Engines at launch will be a 407bhp twin-turbo V8 petrol (great if you own an oil well), BMW's magnificent 326bhp twin-turbo straight-six cylinder petrol and the single-turbo 245bhp straight-six diesel. New toys include a front blind-spot camera, a night-vision system (carrot-tronic?), a head-up display with speed-limit warning, speed-related active steering and a lane-change warning system. On sale on November 15, prices are likely to be an increase between three and four per cent on the current cars, which start at just over £50,000.

There's a newfront blind spot camera? Bear is going to see if that can be retrofitted into his M6. As far as I remember, everything forward of his windshield is in a huge blind spot. From what I remember him posting, you have to be Mary Lou Retton to be able to see out of the front of the M6.

No, you have that all wrong. You need to be Mary Lou Retton to reach the trunk release while sitting in the front seat with the door closed. Pay attention!
