Ok, being the true contrarian I am and cheap to boot. I am debating getting rid of my 5 and picking up a 750i. Yes, that is right. Dump the car with better gas mileage and buy the Luxo-Barge.
From a financial sense I have acutally justified this in my mind. The market is flooded with CPOed 2006 models (over 900 now on BMWs web site). The price of these has hit the floor to a point where the 750i is almost the same price as a 535xi of the same vintage. This advanced depreciation will easily pay for the extra $ spent on gas and on the flip side, give me a price boost on the 5.
I sort of have in my mind a 2006 750i with Convenience package, Luxury seating, Premium Sound, and Comfort Access. The logic is: 2006 for the upgraded engine, many coming off lease and the transmission bang seems to be fixed for this year. The i because the extra 6" of the iL really takes it over the edge for size.
Of those present owners, what are your comments on the car itself? Are you pleased with the performance? Have you had any continuing problems with the transmission? Is it too much of a jump into a real Luxo-Barge as I would mainly be driving with only one or two people in it. How about the option choice? Anyone have Adaptive Ride and is that worth it?
Opinions please (like I really have to say that to this group!!)

Oh yes. The 6er ain't going anywhere!!!!
I say if you want to get it, then do it.
You're not going to "make money" by buying the car at a good time. But you're wise for satisfying your passion while taking advantage of the current market.

The majority of that 6" L difference is rear legroom, so for one or two, the i is a good choice. That being said, the L might hold it's value better down the road as I think it's the more popular model. (Insert your analysis of future oil markets/gas prices v demand for different models.)
I've only had the 750 for 5 months so can't really speak to continuing problems. None so far. I had none with the '04 745 either, for that matter.
Performance??? Gman can really speak to this - he drove his Li hard on the ToD and it was no slacker! Performed very well for a "Luxo-barge."

Boxy beat me to this point - but I'll reinforce it. I was behind him for a bit, and he was staying ahead and pulling ahead of my 6 on and off. Some of that was the difference in driver ability, but my impression was the 7 series handling belies it size.

One thing I'd like to add. Driving the 7 (Li) does not feel like you're driving a big car. There's none of that floating you get with Town Cars or Caddys. The suspension, steering and braking is all BMW. It really does drive/handle like a much smaller car.

This from a man who "drives" (a word I use advisedly) a Prius.

I'm a big fan of the 7 series. I love it. I drove the 750i over two years ago during the memorable M6 Drive Day (following the acquisition of my 650i). The 7 is the most sporty "luxo-barge" you will probably ever drive up till now. The single aspect that I remember most about it was how comfortable the ride was, despite being driven moderately hard by me. It was even riding on 20" OEM alloy wheels (no.149).
If BMW never revived the 6 series, I'll probably be driving the 750Li or the 760Li now.

Thanks for the input guys!!
Has anyone had experience with the options?? To me the Luxury Seating and Premium Sound are cannot do without features.
The Convenience Package and Comfort Access look like nice features. Anyone have an optinion on them? Are either one of these deal breakers for you if you do not have them?
Finally, the Adaptive Ride. It looks like this was an option that most people did not order. Does anyone have it on their 7 and if so, what do you think?

The LSP and PS are "cannot do without" features, and would be a deal breaker for me.
I've had CP on both 7ers and CA only on the 750. They are both, as you say, nice features. The CP is more desirable, IMO, than CA, but wouldn't avoid a well priced car if either was missing.
I've never had Adaptive Ride, and can't comment on it.

CA is garbage on my 650i....it is nice for opening the doors but >50% time when I want to open my trunk it will not work properly. At this point it was a waste of money for new purchase, but used if you can get it do so, the option cost will have depreciated alot as well

Both of my partners have keyless go (the MBZ and correct name for the pathetic "comfort access"). I have it in both Bimmers and on the Merc. I would not go without it again.
When my older partner (of 33 years) was getting his new 335i I told him to get keyless go and that if he found he could live without it I would reimburse him the cost. (It's like $500 on the 335i.) He loves it, so I saved myself some dough. I like being able to keep my keys in my pocket when I start the engine. I don't like to have to move around the 100 dollar bills too much.
As for the 6er trunk opening, that's a weak spot on all 6ers, so don't measure keyless go by that.
The sports seats are great. I've got non-sport in the 535xiT and wish I had the M6 seats in that car. But the premium sound is not my cuppa tea. If I want to hear good sound I'll use ear phones, go to Bear's place or go to a concert. A moving car is not conducive to great listening. (Also, it is soporific for an :old: .)
So, what's good for you is what's good for you. A matter of personal choice. (Unless, of course, you are tbal and want oversized, garish 22 inch wheels. In that case, you're an idiot. :lool: )

But this pretty important for me..I must admit I do like the Push button start and door opening but I am still miffed on the trunk

The trunk opening sucks whether you have keyless go or not. As a remote on my 650i it sucked. As a remove on my M6 fob it sucks. Touching it to open it sucks almost as much, too. Are you confusing remote with keyless go?

And let us not forget that to open the trunk using the interior button, you need to be Mary-Lou Retton!
