View Full Version : Need Help From the Braintrust
The new governess, who drives the 535xiT, told me tonight that the "little engine light" was on in the breadbox (staton wagon for newbies). Sh!t.
I went out and started the car. The little engine symbol in the instrument cluster stayed lit and the triangle with the exclamation point was lit below it (to the left in the lower part of the cluster). When I went into the iDrive to find out WTF was going on, the triangle light went off and the iDrive said all systems were fine. But the frigging engine symbol stayed lit.
Ideas? (It has rained here as if the ark was going to be launched. So I am hoping the wiring got a little wet and maybe the light is just stuck on.)

My 550i had a similar symptom when new, a check engine light with no issues reported in iDrive or Check Control. I don't recall the triangle. It turned out to be a fuel vapor purge valve warning. It can be caused by a loose gas cap. Mine was not. They reset the light but it came back in a week. They then replaced the purge valve. No lights since (about 6-7 weeks).

How's the fuel economy, seen plenty of "little engine lights"related to sensors that helps determine the correct air to fuel ratio.
Might be trip to BS :bmw:

I had forgotten about the loose gas cap. I went out and re-adjusted it. I think it was tight, but we'll see.

The light just came on. Last week I took a 180 mile trip, all on clear freeways, with 3 passengers, and I got 29 MPG!

Did you get gas recently? Check the gas cap. If air gets in there, that light can come on.

All sorts of things can cause the CEL to glow, and then disappear. Persistent CEL's--on my Audi it blinks if the fault is serious--require immediate attention. You need to have a dealer check to see if a diagnostic code was thrown.

Question is what do you trust? iDrive, the frigging engine symbol or neither? If you don't trust any, and it still is on, then only :bs: :bmw: , which you might also not trust. I'll pray to God to postphone the launch, though.
Who's the new governess?

When you come over to pick Macadamia nuts, Mal, we'll hook her up to my code reader to see what ails her. I'm referring to the governess, of course :scared: :censored:

Any service done recently to it Mal?
My car was due for inspection (and other details) in December. I took it in around November and everything seemed fine... When I came back at the beggining of this month, the warning light (triangle) came on and idrive indicated that everything was in order.
I called the dealer and they said I needed to take it it so they could "reboot" the system.
I hope you figure out the problem soon Mal.
Cheers!
