Always the helpful son:
I'm surprised you speed junkies want your plates to be more visible!
He sent me several emails last night about the LED's but I haven't been able to discuss it with him. One thing he did mention started me thinking - he said if you don't have a fairly close resistor, the LED's will blow at first power on - their max power is very low. That means the LED bulbs must have a resistor built-in. So far so good and it makes sense, but if that is the case, why do they generate error codes? The only thing I can think of is the car is looking for something other than current draw to determine if a bulb is blown or not. :dunno:
Go with cd's link and I guess it's not going to be an issue. :tbal:

Isn't current draw directly based on resistance?

I PM'd the guy selling them in CD's link. We'll see!

Just call ECS Tuning and ask them about the Ziza LED's. They carry them for VW I think, but I would guess that they may use the same bulb when it comes to license plate lighting. The Ziza are LED and white, but they have the resistor built in. Then post here and let us know what you find.

I already ordered them. They will be here on Sat (and probably sit in the box 'till D!Tailed gets here)

As I was checking the box to upgrade to priority shipping...I was thinking...
"This is a waste, I'll probably lose these before I get them installed!"

Isn't current draw directly based on resistance?
Yes, the amount of current drawn (or used) is based on resistance - of the bulb, motor, heating element or resistor in this case. Thing is, the error-code throwing LED's must have a resistor or they would blow the first time the power hit them - they don't so they do. That being said, we can assume the car is not looking for current draw to determine if a bulb is blown or not. It must use some other method to determine if a bulb is out. I don't know what that is, but would like to...I'm a curious sort in these kinds of things.

Guys the LED lamps we are seeing as replacements for standard bulbs usually come with micro/miniature circuit boards to take care of the interface of what the car expects to see and what the LED needs to operate properly. If you were to examine your ibrights carefully you would see a miniature circuit card hidden in the aluminum housing. Same applies to the license plate lamps as well, I think. From looking at those on the site IMO i would guess a micro/mini CB there as well. The $36 price also leads me to belive this as LEDs are certainly not that expensive. BTW I ordered mine as well.
