View Full Version : questions from a noob
Hi guys, so I have a few questions regarding updating my idrive, I did some brief searches but didnt find much info on a 04 645ci
first off whats a sib? and ive noticed that you guys have been telling dealers problems that are known frequently with your idrive version to get an updated one. I wouldl ike to know how I can get a free updated version for my car (3 year old version lol), what should I tell my dealer and call all bmw dealers upgrade softeware?
thanks

Software upgrades aren't really specific to a model year: your '04 645 can be upgraded to the same version an '07 650 is running. Don't limit your searches to your model and year.
An SIB (Service Information Bulletin, I've always assumed) is a document from BMW that addresses a specific problem with a model and gives the service departments specific procedures to fix it. The best part is that it lists what owners will complain about when they have the problem. If you complain of the things in an SIB, you will get the fix - assuming you have a competent SA.
This summer, I was upgraded to version 25.02 because I complained of the "CD run-on" problem (I really did have it.) CD run-on is one of the issues addressed in an SIB for which the cure is upgrading to 25.02.
Cobradav is the acknowledged master of the SIB's. He can provide a lot more information and help.

SIB = Service Information Bulletin. Some of our members having dealt with older models will probably refer to them as Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs. But as they now incorporate more than just technical information the name was changed to ....SIB.
I just copied just released SIB that indicates BMW just changed and refined their "construction" categories. Probably nearly transparent to most but it will be a nightmare for me trying to track the transition. I'll post the cross reference in a new thread at some point.

SIB question answered in a couple of posts above this one.
As far as free that depends. Did you purchase new or used (if this information is available in other threads elsewhere I do not have the time to go look it up)? Still under warranty, a CPO vehicle? Tell us more.
After reviewing the suggested threads which contain lists of problems in the PROGMAN SIBs you should find several things that are legitimate issues. Once you have some idea on target items come back and we can assist with additional data. We need more info from you
Do you have any idea if the car had a software update (PROGMAN former known as CIP) at any time in its life? If you could point to a month/year we could approximate the version level you are on. Other wise GIve us the build date (door jam) and we can assume the worse.
But just to view what has been updated do a search on "PROGMAN" limited to this forum.
Also review the threads "PROGMAN (Formerly CIP) List", "PROGMAN 27.00.00 SIB released 27 Sept 07", and "SIB List"
We will pull you up to Noob++ status in no time :greenlaff:

Thanks for the replies guys, im starting to understand it a bit more. Heres some info on my car, i have a used 2004 645ci. Im from canada and over here (not too sure about US) they have something called 'certified series' for used cars basically giving an additional 3 year warranty from purchase and other small benefits. I am not aware if the car has been updated in the past. Here are some pics of it however, maybe you guys are able to judge what version it is? if you can, what problems are linked with this version?

Now I dont really have any problems with my idrive, I just heard good stuff about the updated ones which is why I want it. I am however sick of the warning screen that i have to alwayts accept to get rid of it and i know the updated version gets rid of it automatically.
anywyas lookin forward to hearing more about this topic from u guys!
thanks
