PROGMANs (versions) are roughly based on the date of installation. There is no way for us mere mortals to know what PROGMAN is running on our iDrive -- it won't tell us. When your PROGMAN is updated by your dealer (either under warranty for a fault or because you have paid for an update). you need to ask for a copy of the "Measures Report." The version of PROGMAN or the target information (Cobradav can explain that -- it's beyond my pay grade) or both will be provided.
One way to estimate what PROGMAN you have is by looking visually at the screens and describing their look, or by describing the various features you have. Updates over a period of time has changed the look and features of the iDrive visual interface. Another way is by trying to determine if you have ever had any updates. Or, when your car was manufactured or delivered (which assumes it's had the original PROGMAN and no updates since).

EDIT: OOPS, PLEASE DISREGARD THE INFORMATION BELOW
I just read the whole thread linked just below. Our NASA/BMW expert Cobradav commented in the thread the the information found from the procedure below IS inaccurate.
But I decided to leave the part below as is just to avoid the "D**n, I thought I just saw a post on this, some moderator must be deleting posts" syndrom.
Actually, I just saw this post on E60.net http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=38772&hl=. I have not validated the procedure so I can't vouch for it or any issues that might result from trying this. <NOTE: Newer versions than shown below are in a Cobradav thread on CIP versions>
To access the Secret Menu: (Put ignition key in 2nd position)
1. Push down i-Drive knob for approx 8 sec
2. Turn right 3 clicks
3. Turn left 3 clicks
4. Turn right 1 click
5. Turn left 1 click
6. Turn right 1 click
7. Push down i-Drive knob
To get your CIP code (may be slight variations on the below):
1. Go to menu 'Versionkontrolle'
2. Scroll to the very bottom and you should something similiar to "I-05-09-510_050509", where "05-09-510" corresponds to one of the below:
CIP 20.00.00 (Target data Status E060-05-12-500).
CIP 19.02.03 (Target data Status E060-05-09-535).
CIP 19.02.00 (Target data Status E060-05-09-530).
CIP 19.01.00 (Target data Status E060-05-09-530).
CIP 19.00 (Target data Status E060-05-09-510).
CIP 18.00.01 (Target data Status E060-05-06-510).
CIP 18.00 (Target data Status E060-05-06-510).
CIP 17.01 (Target data Status E060-05-06-500).
CIP 17.0 (Target data Status E060-05-03-520).
CIP 16.1 (Target data Status E060-05-03-520).
CIP 16.0 (Target data Status E060-04-09-555).

The process Richard quoted and subsequently realized did not work (safe cracker technique) truely does not work for SAT NAV equipped vehicles.
So back to Mals advice and these questions.
I presume you bought used.
Did you get the maintenance paperwork from the original owner?
If you do we may be able to wade through it and find a CIP or PROGMAN upgrade. CIP/PROGMAN are one and the same , just a change in BMWs nomenclature.
If not, can you get the records from your dealer?
Can you play MP3s in your in-dash CD player? If yes - v20.00.00 or newer
On your NAV display do you have the ICONS shown on this map on the left hand side? If yes v16.01.00 or newer

You should note that a particular version in one country does not necessarily equate to the same numbered version (if it exists) in another country. One country may have more issues with their cars and may need more upgrades than in the UK for example, and BMW does not necessarily produce the same upgrades/iDrive versions across all countries.

While that may be true that there may be some country specific issues those are generally addressed in the last pair of digits in a given release. All the major fixes or features changes were issued world wide. For instance, at the factory they do not put in one numbered version for cars destined for say Australia and a different numbered version for North America. Each numbered version is capable of handling the language, measurement, and any other unique issues (no SAT Radio - no problem it is not coded, different DVD format - no problem change the country code).
We have to find a way to crack the code gentlemen. We can't be taken seriously otherwise!
