I read some info on removing the charcoal filter and decided to try it tonight....
jury is in, -it works! the car felt a little more crisper, but I set up the g-meter and have some very impressive results.... this is my original post from bimmerfest, before the filter removal... tonight's #'s are in bold....
3981lbs(including me)
.3pitch
set RPM at 1500
car had me only in it, 1/8 tank of gas 3/4 tank
2 runs on my lunch break . evening, 67 degrees, somewhat a little humid
1- 0-60 with dsc off 4.91, no 1/4 mile(not enough road) 4.82
2- 0-60 4.88, chirpped 1st &2nd gear,dsc completely off, 13.14 1/4 mile, 109.77mph
0-60 4.70, 12.983 1/4 mile @ 111.32 mph

328hp measured 348
346lb/ft tq 347
.76 "g's" .82

I did about 5 runs, but all of them were better than the last time, but these are the best 2 :race:

.........I realize the g-tech may or may not be 100% accurate, but these runs "felt" really strong as well. BTW, On these 2 I tried something a little different, I was dragging the clutch while holding her at 1500rpm, but I also had my hand on my e-brake preventing roll(kinda like power-braking it with an auto) while holding the thumb-button in, when I took off, I released the e-brake, fed the power in with the clutch, and rolled the gas pedal to the floor...(and quickly grabbed the shifter) weather was sunny, no humidity, 62 degrees,
400ft above sea level

That was fun

All right, very impressive (even the before #s). :race: :knight2: Any idea of your wx on the earlier "before" runs? Wx can be a big factor.

If you could take the time and do same time of day with and w/o runs would be best for comparison. But I do know what u mean by seat of the pants feel. Everyone of my best Gtech runs was truly felt in the "seat". No doubt about it. Sometimes it felt like an entirely different car.

Way too hot and humid for me to even think about this. We are at 95 degrees and 95% humidity!

What about sound? Big difference or no?

Cobradav - do you have (have you had) the charcoal filter removed for some time or is it a recent thing? For example, did you have the charcoal removed in April at the ToD and SESF?

Do the M cars have these filters too? Where are they?

I think the sound was a little better as well, probably due to the response being crisper-- sounded more like a V8 should, without the "fsssssst" sound when you stab the throttle at idle, if ya know what I mean--- What is "wx" ????

I wanted to do the runs after it cooled off a little, as my original ones were done in the spring, at about 65 degrees or so (with no humidity) -- I can't wait for the autumn here in new england, the evenings are sooooooo crisp and the car acts like a completely different vehicle

Autumn? When I was in Massachusetts there were only 2 seasons - August and Winter.

Again...does the V-10 have these filters and where are they? Are they relatively easy to remove?

Yes it does. I saw them when I had the rat-ectomy of the M6. They are even in the same place as in the 645Ci/650i. However, the filters are in place to reduce smoggy burps and I doubt very very much the effect is anything other than psychological.

So can anyone explain why the V-10 has 7 extra HP in Euro dress and does NOT contain these filters? Is that just a coincidence?

Okay, this is going to sound stupid, but which filters are we talking about? Air filters? Are they on a 645? Location would be great. If it is easy to pull out, I may try it.

Any idea of whether or not this affects mileage?
