I am not surprised... I have wondered my self about the INTEGRATED Navi versus a Tom-Tom or Garmin.

Other than the faster and cheaper functionality of these units, is INTEGRATION better in you guys opinions?

Well it is obviously better to have the unit integrated into the vehicle for a lot of reasons, but it sure is nice to use one of these Nav devices that really works well.

Also some other notes... On some of the Garmins it actually says the street names... not just "Make Left 200 yards ahead".. I don't think TomTom's have this feature yet but if they do it's on the high end ones.

I have a Treo 650 that i have put TomTom on and works like a champ with a gps bluetooth receiver the size of a stick of gum. but i would like it to say street names.

Also:

From Slickdeals.net

Toysrus (in stores only) has the TomTom One GPS for $200 - 20% off instantly at the register = $160. Also, trying asking for a Are you Smarter then a 5th grader game piece and answer the question correctly to get an additional 10% off bringing it down to $144.. Lowest on Pricegrabber is $206.

Yes, my Garmin Nuvi 680 says all the street names, and interestingly it also will "say" whatever you choose to save a location as. For example, if I put Mal's address in it and saved it as "Pompous Gasbag's House" it would actually say, "Arriving at Pompous Gasbag's House on right!"

However, I guess it has a "bad word" filter, because I tried to enter a few nasty words, and while it DID display them on the screen, it would NOT say them. It was fun entering "The Lobster House" as "Da Lobstah House" and hearing it speak with a New England accent!

One other GREAT feature was the ability to decide if I wanted the audio out put to come from the enclosed speaker (which can be turned up loud and sounds amazing by the way) or choose to have it transmit to the car stereo using an empty FM frequency. That came in REAL handy when I was driving around Boston with the windows down and the tunes cranked. And by TUNES, I mean the MP3's that I had loaded onto the SD card in the Garmin. The Bluetooth was also VERY easy to pair and use. It loaded up my entire phone book in about 40 seconds, and the few people that I spoke to said they could hear me fine.

I really love this piece!

OK, then I'll just look for an old Biddie pressing her thumb against the lock cylinder 5 or 6 times trying to get the damn thing to lock!

Entering addresses is a far faster process with a touch screen than iDrive scrolling.

Yup. All my other vehicles have in-dash GPS units with touch screens. They BLOW AWAY the Nav in the 6er. It is light years BEHIND anything else. :ball:

Bear, what are the key advantages, aside from touch-screen, that make other OEM units superior to the iDrive Nav? I do recall someone complaining that the Lexus unit will not allow entering addresses while driving, which is too Big Brother-ish for my taste.

Go to an Acura dealership and "test drive" the Acura RL navigation system, compared to the BMW iDrive the UI will blow you away. It is a joint venture with IBM, Alpine and Honda. Hands down the best I have seen.
