A business aquaintance of mine (and on the verge of committing to the ToD meet) asked me today if I had ever heard of getting a flat on a run-flat. He bought a 335 a couple of months ago, and had a flat yesterday, the result of a 3" nail in the tire. Not an "air is gone, safely drive 50 miles" flat, but a "down on the rim, tow it in" flat. He has Bridgestone Potenza RFT's, OEM.

His dealer told him since he didn't buy the tire warranty the new tire (notice I didn't have to spell it t-y-r-e to avoid the auto-link) would be on his dime. I said he should argue forcefully that the OEM tire warranty should cover it, which he is persuing.

Has anyone heard of this? I think this has to be a defective tire and should be replaced under Bridgestone's warranty - bad PR if it became known that some RFT's weren't. Regardless of warranty coverage, is this a known problem?

Makes no sense to me. The stiff sidewall should have supported the car.

The sidewalls had to have been compromised in some way - such as being driven flat for a while. Which means that maybe the FTM is defective. Either the tire was defective or the FTM was defective. Either way, it really should be a warranty claim.

I've seen some big gashes in the RFTs and that didn't happen. As Mal said, could have been driven a long time with either of the issues he mentioned. I'd be working over some folks. Isn't the new 335 a TPM? A check of that system is sure required.

He told me he pulled over as soon as the warning light came on. I'll query him again (and also about the ToD) this week.

wow... You know when I had my RFT compromise, I only had seconds of drive time before I could no longer drive. I had a flat and that was that... I think in my case the wall was compromised (failed) due to tear next to the rim. Your friend has to speak to the manufacturer since the dealer doesn't want to honor a replacement.

So is your friend coming..?

So is your friend coming..?
Nope. When he said, "Let me check with my wife," I knew that probably meant he wouldn't be coming. Maybe she's a redhead or speaks Portugese.
