I have read this very same subject over on the M5board. Many think that the 15 hp gain is due to the removal of the charcoal filter. IMO, there isn't any power gain to be made from the Dinan software. At best it raises your redline and the speed governor is gone. There is better software than Dinan's as posted by Cobradav. I wouldn't be surprised if Dinan actually bought this from another vendor and calling it as their own. They have done this with some of their performance parts i.e. Dinan Big Brake Kit which is a rebranded Brembo BBK.

If there really is a power gain from the Dinan software then separate removing the charcoal filter and do a pre and post dyno run on Steven Dinan's personal M5.

I agree it would be hard to separate and think you may have nailed it on the filter. Most folks do not dyno the filter removal or even do Gtech (or similar) before and afters. You would be hard pressed to "feel" the difference as there so many other variables. Possibly a series of in, then out, then back in , then out. But then you still have to control your environment including engine / tranny temps - is just so little gain that it just becomes a matter of " you should have seen the whopping big fish that got away" stories :blah:

I am about to get my filters taken out we will see if it makes a difference. I will see if I can get them to dyno a before and after.

I assume you mean the charcoal filters?

Yup, we will see if it makes difference. I have heard from other M5/6 owners it makes a diference.

Hmm, if BMW put them in there, I guess it was for a reason. What type of damage will occur (if any) when they are removed?

The word on the skreets is, it is an US Emission requirement; when the engine is turned off a certain gas is released into the atmosphere. The charcoal minimizes this gas during shutdown. So the charcoal stops some of the gas during shutdown and reduces some of the horsepower 7-9hp all the time. So it is said taking the filters off ups the hp 7-9. Not that noticeable in my opinion but I am going to try and then have them put back on if it is not noticeable.

Ah, doesn't sound like much to me either.

By all accounts I can find, the Charcoal filter is a US Spec only. Europe and ROW do not have it. At least in the V8s. Was not sure about the V10s, but I think the same holds true. Partially explains differences in HP ratings between locations.

Are they easy to get to and remove? User friendly...when the user happens to be ME????? :scared:

Do a search ( :greenlaff: )

CD posted instructions on removing the regular filters - IIRC, he also indicates the charcoal ones in his pictures.
