Do this defect affect all convertibles or an specific production date?.. Now you got me concerned.. Is the Sirius receiver and amplifier near the battery? I would like to check it myself. Are they easily reachable? I have not experienced any problems with sound quality or noise. My car has been under a few storms....Thanks again. :bmw:

All, not limited to specific date, yet. BMW will probably put a fix in place for future production runs. Yuo should be able to make your own inspection. Now and after each signififcant rain check the stowage area for signs of water indicating poor sealing. Make sure dealer is aware and does his inspection when car in for service. Do not "assume" they will know to do it.

Where is the amp and Sirius receiver? I'd happily check it if I knew where to look...

Cobradav, thanks so much for the information. But, it bothers me to think that this is happening on a brand new 2006 car. I have read that BMW does an extensive water infiltration test right at the factory and they dont pick this up.. or is it an issue where the outer gasket seal of the metal flip up cover degrades with time? :headache:

I was asked a similar question over on bimmerfest.com a couple of years ago on SIRIUS antenna location. At that time I told the poster where in words, but have since been able to get some BMWTIS documents on it. Not that it is any more helpful, however.
I would be overly concerned about where the components are, let BMW check those. The key is to see if yo uget appreciable moisture in the storage area. On my Audi cabrio I check periodically and have never found moisture after I wash or after hard rain.
Antennae and amplifiers are tucked around trunk and top storage area. Two multi-band (frequency) antennae tucked under trunk lid. One just each side of centerline. Two connections to one, three to the other. Each one is a different part number. Although parts list shows an antenna amplifier my '05 does not have one. I suspect it was for TDMA phones and/or CTP9000 phone. The trunk is non-metallic composite material
But here are some pdfs with some additional info. Although for coupe the some info on vert differences is indicated.

Well BMW has found what appears to be cause and effect, but unless you are getting real water intrusion into the top storage area I would not be overly concerned. I wonder if perhaps some of these might be owners who improperly take their cars into a high pressure auto wash or use high pressure in self wash. I found my wife was trying to save me some washing effort on her Audi Cabrio and was going through an automatic car wash (but not high pressure). Still I like to do everything myself so I KNOW everything that is happening to my cars.

:stupid: My brother was complaining about water leaking via the sunroof gasket in his Volvo XC-90. I asked him if the heavy rains we've had lately were the cause. He said, "No. Just when I go through the auto car wash." He uses the high pressure version. I wasn't suprised and told him so. BTW, he never hand washes his Volvo and hasn't waxed it in 3 years of ownership (I'm glad he's not a BMW owner.) :shake: It looks like he's telling the truth. Some people...

Cobra, thanks for those PDF's. So far, my BMW is water free, except what I spill inside, so I suspect I'm probably okay for the time being. I'll definitely keep an eye on things and make sure waters don't intrude or rise!

Cobradav, I just set up an appointment for service to check the stowage compartment and seal. I do get water whenever I put the car thru the car wash, but very little usually on the sides and the water ends up running down the drain plugs in the stowage compartment. This is the same car wash that my dealer uses to prep their cars and they do not use high pressure water systems. Did you have your car done as per the SIB? My sound system, sirius and speakers are OK but I'm going to talk the service manager into installing the vapor barriers as per the attached SIB. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks again. :-P

Cobradav, let me first say that "you are the man.." Thank you so much for the SIB. I just got my car back from service from BMW of Manhattan. They did all the work as per SIB 651807 and now I have peace of mind knowing that my stowage compartment will not get flooded in a bad rain storm. Here is the work summary as per my repair order:
20708 CLOGGED WATER DRAINS OF CONV. TOP. CLEARED DRAINS OF CONV. TOP COMPARTMENT. REMOVED TRUNK LINER EXAMINED AMP FOR WATER DAMAGE AND NONE FOUND. COATED STOWAGE COMPARTMENT SEAL WITH WEATHER STRIP ADHESIVE AND INSTALLED VAPOR BARRIERS/RUBBER PLUGS AS PE SIB 651807. DEFECT CODE: 41 34 00 48 00.
PARTS USED:
1 - 26-12-7-511-140 BUTYL TAPE
2 - 51-71-8-186-501 GROMMET
1 - 51-48-8-402-389 INSULATION (VAPOR BARRIER)
I highly recommend this work to all convertible owners out there. The work only took 2 hours to complete including the open campaing listed below for the "retrofit of ground cables".
Also, there was an open campaing for my E64 as per SIB121007 for RETROFIT OF GROUND CABLES. I do not know if this SIB applies to all E63/E64. Maybe you can look this one up and let the board members know about this one as well. Again, thanks for your insight and if you are ever in the NY area let me know. Have a great weekend. :bravo:

I stripped some of the quoted material out so it would not be so long.
That's the idea of posting SIBs or other tech/maintenance info we run into so we all know and where possible, fix BEFORE it becomes a problem.
The Ground cables thing is a "Service Action" close to, but not quite a RECALL. I post it up in a specific thread so it is not buried here.
In summary it impacts x50 vehicles (4.8L engine) manufactured from 3/05 to 6/07. Link to specific thread and pdf of SIB: viewtopic.php?f=42&t=404 (http://knightsoftheroundel.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=404)
Rather than me coming to NY how about we split the difference and meet at say...... Tail of the Dragon, say around......... Oct 24-28.
Glad to be of service
