WOW!
I truly AM among greatness!
:bravo:
What a great thread. And to think it started out as a query about how to clean that pesky rear window in the tin can!

Wow, you guys had punched cards
My NZAP-1 computer in the then ABM (pre-START treaty) Nike-ZEUS radar had core memory that had to be removed (in a standard 18" rack drawer) and placed on the C-Plane tester. Looked something like a drill press, with flatbed mount with X & Y plane dial controls. Want a "1" on word 5, bit 3? Then place the proper drawer in the mount, adjust the X & Y plane to that bit, bring the drill press handle down so the electo-magnet hovers over that core and hit the button, zzzzzzzzzzzzap, you magnatized that bit for a "1". Repeat procedure if you made a mistake and want a "0". And so it goes until you have just what you need to track the enemy ballistic missile. When we upgraded we went to torn paper tape similar to TTY (Teletype for you youngsters) although TTY is still in use today primarily for hearing imparied. We would punch out paper tape code and then read it into the NEW computer. I used to intermix computers with anywhere from 8 bit word to 128 bit words, 4, 6 and 8 bit bytes, some with left hand LSD (least significant digit) talking to a right handed LSD (oh that was fun).
Besides doing math in decimal system I had to work in:
binary
octal
binary coded gray code or scale
hexadecimal
plus some specific systems code that was none of the above
Damn, you noobs had all the good stuff :violin:
Wow, that WAS primitive. I worked on systems with core memory but never had to magnitize each donut http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Magnetic_core.jpg. One system I worked on, a breadboard based micro processor was programmed in Intel machine language with a hex keyboard. But on the most primitive system I worked on, a DEC PDP-8 http://www.pdp8.net/pdp8i/pics/pdp8i_frontpanel.shtml?large, I had to program the boot code in binary on the front panel. That loaded the loader from floppy. The loader then could load a program such as a TTY based editor. I then entered the assignments (such as completing an assembler) in hexidecimal machine language. With the assembler working, you could then program in a slightly more friendly language.

It is really quite interesting to see how a given post will vear off topic. I really could care less, but it seems that once the OP's question has been answered a few times...it seems to go South...sometimes in a good way...like this thread.
I think this

is where it Jumped the Shark so to speak, but think about all the interesting stuff we never would have found out about some of our members if it hadn't. I say SCREW the "off-topic" Smilie and have fun!

I'm utterly disgusted that all you guys have taken my thread and lead astray my topic. You guys keep up with this and I'm outta here. I'll be starting my own BMW 6 series appreciation site.
By the way, I like Jack Daniels.

No worries. I cut the JD with Makers Mark to water it down a bit.
