View Full Version : What is Your V-10's MPG???
A healthy lead footed 6.5 mpg for me.
I just changed my M settings from the tire shredding P500, S6 DSC Off to M = P500, S5, MDM. So we will see if it changes the mpg any, doubt it.
I have not monitored the oil consumption. Dealership has put in 2 bottles since I have had it at no cost to me when I stopped in for a pit stops.
I am going to start watching it to see.

6.5 mpg is unbelievably low, even from what I'ver heard and read about the V10. i managed 9 mpg all day on a racetrack with the 650i. Adding a little normal driving (to and from the hotel) got me quickly to 12 mpg.
What was I thinking, nothing is valid without pics. Actually, I was little off, it went up!!
There we go!!

I have never taken it on the track but intend to. Hopefully the track has a gas station nearby.
Holy, moly that's low. Did you take it up to 8250 RPM in every gear? When I drove the M5 and M6 at the California raceway I did a little experiment and checked my gas mileage. For full race mode I was at 6 MPG. That was going around the closed short course at up to 106 MPH and braking hard into the corners and stepping on it to the next corner, etc. No wonder you were keeping up with me on the 6erfest. Your car is on smack.
There is something wrong, though. I get around 13 in all around driving, 11.9 in hard driving and 20+ MPG freeway cruising. When I turn the shift speed down to 1 bar and just loll around, no-brainer-like, I can get 18 MPG.
Better loan me your car for a few days, XMN, so I can diagnose it. I'm bringing the rattlebox in next week to have the ashtray untweaked, the oil changed (on my dime) and the PROGMAN re-done (what are my symptoms?), and you can drop off the M5 then for my expert diagnosis. I won't charge you my regular hourly rates because I am such a nice guy.

I think I am trying to find an issue with these Falken tires that came with it, so I have been driving hard on them, you know, um research, development and testing, yeah that's it. Truth be told they are holding up really well, no really really well, surprisingly well and I have been thru some highly touted performance tires and these here Falkens are standing very tall. I am not sold on them and I will still stick with my favorite extra sticky Pirelli brand but these Falkens are defying their cheap brand moniker. Maybe they know something we don't??
I will be in your neighborhood tomorrow for that Malibu GTG, maybe I will see you there. I will just give you my M5 and walk home from there. Yeah.

XMN - I would never make you walk home. I'll give you some bus money. Will $3 be enough? As for the tires, maybe if you put some air in them it would help the gas mileage.

Mine seems to be stuck at 14.8.

Are you exclusively using the computer for your mileage? Right now my computer is calculating 17.8 % LOW. Of course that is due to my attempts at adjusting when it was calulating 5% high. These are averages over 10 or more tank fillups and using actual miles driven divided by gallons inserted.
Recommend you baseline your computed mileage by doing some math of your own to see how accurate it is. I won't even go into the correlation matrix I use for city/hiway variations. But does make for interesting histograms too. :throw:

I was hitting 10 mpg with mostly local driving...and getting lower...but back up to 10.3 after a long road trip yesterday...

I figured out why some of you are getting truly horrendous gas mileage. (Or at least I think I know why.) Do not engine brake. Use the pedal next to the accelerator. (In your case, Splendid, I know you've got another pedal to the left.) These high revving engines aren't meant to do the braking except when there is the chance of significant brake fade, and even though, be light on the engine!

Yes, as you know I do engine brake. I will try using the brakes more and see what difference it makes in my mpg. I will keep you posted on the results.
Thanks

I use the barke but I leave my engine in lower gear...I guess thats bad right?

Same here, I am going to try just using the brakes and not downshifting to stop.

I dont downshift to stop but for cruising, especially like yesterday when were doing some hard driving, I keep it in a lower gear and have the power more readily availiable so I dont have to downshift if I want to get on it. I guess thats not a good practice? I thought since these engines were built for higher RPM's it wouldnt matter?
