Hi Guys,
Maybe this is my first post. I'm usually active on bimmerfest forum.
Just want to share some experience on my Brembo Front 8 Piston and Rear 4 Piston.
I took my car to the track. I stopped the car everytime after 3-4 laps. Total probably 10-12 laps.
After the session, everytime I brake, it makes very loud sound on the brake.

I checked to the dealer. The results, all the front pads (total 8 pcs) are cracking. I'll post some pics.

Good first post.

Keep us up to date on your findings as to cause. Has anybody else with Brembo set up on 6er seen/heard same issue?

HS how about posting pic of your 6er to share with us.

I don't use my brakes...it makes the front wheels dirty.

Hah, sounds like a Cobradav driving style. Engine breaking for him.

Seriously, Bear, could you pull off a wheel and check the disks? You could help out a fellow Knight and possibly help yourself, too. Those brakes look pretty awful.

Are those OEM (BMW) pads or some other type/composition? Did you keep your original rotors? Speaking of rotors. what do yours look like - normal? You say you stopped the car every 3-4 laps - did you do a lot of braking during the 3-4 laps and did you ever notice any brake fade?

Richard in NC has a lot of track time...have you seen this before?

I have never seen that personally but I have heard of pads cracking under track abuse. I don't know what could specifically cause it and don't have ideas other than replace the pads. Hopefully the rotors are OK. I also don't understand the stopping every 3-4 laps. Most track events run 20-30 minute sessions which is about 10 laps per session. If you came in to the pits a few times during the session was it because you noticed a brake issue?

Stock pads and rotors would experience fade before getting to issues like that. If those are track pads on Brembo calipers, you should be able to run all day with no issues.

It just occurred to me and I don't feel like re-writting everything above: It is STRONGLY recommended to cool down the brakes during the last lap of a session. This is done by slowing down, staying off the brakes as much as possible (by the engine braking of downshifts) and run several minutes of the last lap at moderate speeds to allow the air to cool everything. I even meander around the paddock for several minutes after a session to provide more air for cooling.
Also, NEVER use the parking brake after a track session or the rear parking brake pads could fuse onto the hot rotors.

If you ran hot laps, pitted for 5-10 minutes while the pads "cooked" while stationary on the hot rotors, and then ran hot laps again, I can see the heat/cooling cycles causing the severe stress enough to crack the pads.

Richard, I think you have the probable answer. He ran hard for 3-4 laps, got the brakes very hot, then stopped without cooling the brakes per your instructions above. Then did it again and again for 3-4 cycles. Too many hot/cold stress cycles for what were probably OEM pads not track pads. If he was using track pads, he wouldn't have taken it to the dealer.
