View Full Version : When Was TPM Introduced on 6er?
GeneArch has taken your place, Cobradav, at bimmerfeast.commercial, dispensing his wisdom. While he's a great guy, and got caught in a mess that was not of his own making, his advice may be lacking.
In discussing the two systems that 6ers have had for tire pressure, Gene wrote this about the TPM:
TPM - Tire Pressure Monitor. Basically a two piece item, a special air valve as well as a module that is on the inside of the rim and connects to the valve stem. This unit monitors the actual pressure inside the rim. (This was introduced in the 2007 model year)
I thought the TPM was actually introduced mid model run 2006, and not in 2007. Do you (or anyone else out there) know what it is? We may as well correct their technical mistakes when we can, since we do owe it to the BMW community that bimmerfeast.commercial has trashed.

Mal, I'm confused. Did you double post your own post, or is there something I didn't see that make the second post different?
Sorry, :dunno:

Can't really figure out what "ET" means so here goes...
Regular 645 19" - 8,5 x 19 Front / ET 14 - 9 x 19 Rear - ET 18
M6 wheels - 8,5 x 19 Front / ET 12 - 9,5 x 19 Rear / ET 17
Do you think they'll fit? Or what is ET (offset) anyway?
Not sure if they will fit, but I recently got the word from my BMW Dealer that my M6 should be here in Mid November. I'll be selling the BRAND NEW M6 OEM wheels/tires the day it arrives (new rims/tires are already at the dealership waiting to be swapped out) so anyone that is interested...make me an offer.
I am in the Long Beach, CA area.

Has anyone else gotten this fellow's spam PM tonight? 1 post here and he thinks he's a regular, and he's PMing others in Southern California, selling stuff.

Thank you for the warm welcome to the forum.
You might want to verify the facts before you openly accuse me of “PMing others in Southern California.” Actually, you were the only person that I “PM'd”, so I suppose it isn't Spam.
And yes, I just joined this forum tonight. This is my first BMW. What makes you assume that I think I am a "regular? Is there a rule that I can't post to the forums on my first day as a member? If so, I guess I didn’t see it.
All I said was that I had brand new OEM M6 wheels/tires for sale if anyone was interested in them since quite a few owners of 6 series cars want the M6 wheels.
SHEEEEESH, lighten up!!!!!

The wheels do fit, I had them on my 645 that I had recently turned in. It seams that Malibubimmer has some issue's after reading some of his replies to other topics.

Of course the wheels will physically fit. But the M6 coupe's wheels have different offsets to the 645Ci/650i, and indeed the rear of the M6 convertible's offset is different to the rear of the M6 coupe's offset. Do you think these differences are random or intended by BMW? To ask if these wheels will fit is a naive question. There is more to it than "will it fit or not".

Here is a pic or 2 from one of our members cars with the M6 wheels. NO issues. The variance in ET is not enough to make it a problem. Note that he is fine company with three of your Dragon Slayer Knights
And I never did respond to GaryRudolph request for link. Here it is:

Yes it will fit perfectly. I am using it on my 645 vert.
I have even lowered it with ACS lowering springs with 10mm spacers to the rear wheel!
Have not experiance any rubbing.

:dunno: What do you want for them? I'm always leary of people that say "make me an offer", especially when they don't even have what they're selling yet. You have to have a $ amount in mind.

chuck9210311-12-2006, 07:39 PM
I think the main issue is for the M6 owners. If you plan on swapping your wheels, make darn sure the wheels you have selected have the tire pressure sensors in them. BMW switch from FTM to TPM for 07.

Yep...$3k gets you the wheels and tires. I already have them promised to a guy here, but until I do the deal for sure, they are still available.
As soon as the new car gets here, they are taking off the OEM wheels and installing the new ones. I am putting larger wheels on the car, and I prefer chrome lips. That is why I am changing them.

What do FTM and TPM stand for?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
cobradav11-12-2006, 08:19 PM
FTM = Flat Tire Monitor. Pre-07 system that uses the rotational speed from ABS sensors to determine that some tire has some difference (high or low) from an established set point - trying to tell you that a tire is going or is flat.
TPM = Tire Pressure monitor - '07 Models have this sensor incorporated into valve stem. Reads actual pressure and sends it to central system. The sensors MUST be included in your new rims or...... constant alarms and no monitoring.

Ah, ok. I will mention that to the company making the new wheels. He said that he has done 3 2007 m6's so far (not convertibles) so I am sure he knows about this, but it is good to be sure.
THANK YOU for the heads up!

BMW switch from FTM to TPM for 07.I thought the US 6er got it already this year on MY06 models...? Well, it seems to be country dependent anyway - I've still got mine with FTM, same situation for Germany.
Dealer's comment based on their 7-Series TPM experience: "Too unreliable and tricky yet..." :dunno:

You could be right, but the '06 e60 manual still states FTM (do not have access to e63 manual). It was a Safety mandate here in US but do not remember when BMW started delivery. I know only recent M6 deliveries are using TPM so I still think MY07 in US is first use on e63/e64.

Hmmm, according to your initial post, the wheels and tires were already at the dealer, ready to go. Something's fishy here...

I think we have another pimple-faced 15 year old pretending to be a BMW owner. He's also posted elsewhere asking how he can supercharge his M6. Apparently 510 HP is not enough for him. I think he wants 800 HP or more. Then he will feel better.
He's getting his dealer in Southern California to sell it to him for MSRP, too. :jack:

Yep. After I read some of these posts lately, the bs flag virtually goes up in my mind. Also, an OEM M6 is worth more than modded. Even with a wheel swap, I would never sell the originals. I would find space somewhere for them.

Yes, they are at the dealer, but the dealership tells me now that they can't install them on the car due to some liability issue if I don't have the tire valves installed a head of time, and that without the correct tire valves the car will show some sort of error. So now the wheel company has to install them, which means I have to pay them to put them in.
Boy, I tell you. Most of you guys on this site are amazingly un-trustworthy. Maybe you guys "tell stories" and assume everyone else does too!
Totally amazing!

Boy I sure hope to run into you at a SOCAL BMW event sometime soon so I can tell you in person what a jerk you sound like! And you are a lawyer? Hard to believe!
Is it so wrong for me to ask people on this forum about supercharging my car? Isn't one of the purposes of these forums to get information from those who have "been around the block" so to speak? Or maybe in your world, you are here just to doubt everyone that isn’t in your little circle of friends?
Is there something wrong with me wanting to upgrade my car? Does it bother you personally? It sure seems like it does! And I am sorry if you paid over MSRP for your car...but I guess I got lucky. I'll try to remember to keep my bill of sale in the glove box in case I run into you anywhere. Then you can publicly apologize here on the forum.
You will know me… I will be the one asking people about how I can get my car supercharged with the money that I saved by paying MSRP.

Cool, then why don't you and Malibu pool your cash and make a shrewd investment.
Buy them from me so some poor fool that didn't know any better and went ahead and modded his M6 will have to buy them back from you... at a premium.

I thought about that too, but in the past, I have kept OEM wheels after I swapped them out with the ones I really wanted; only to get stuck with them down the road.
There are quite a few guys out there with 645's and 650's that didn't want to spend the extra cash for the M6, but would like their 6 series to look more like the M. So, now is my time to sell them.
Is that good enough for you?

Thank you.
1. Chuck92103-05645 - You were right. There were two posts. I don't know why. I think when I went into one to correct a typo on the thread starter I hit "quote" rather than "edit." I have written to DJ@RichardsonBMW and he has agreed to remove my second, duplicate post.
2. As for the Bear, you were obviously difficult back then, when you first came on the bimmerfeast.commercial board, pretending you owned an M6 convertible when I knew they weren't coming out for months, and saying that 510 HP (I was off by 10!) wasn't enough for you. First, you gave me trouble, and now you give the bimmerfeast.commercial people trouble. A beautiful friendship.
3. So, does anyone know then the TPM replaced the FTM on the 6er? Maybe Cobradav can tell me. This is, after all, his forum.

I can tell you I have a 4/06 build 650i with TPM. I'm pretty sure I recall it came out just before that.
I have TPM on my 04 X3 so I am sure the 04 6 would have had it. Maybe?

TPM or FTM? And if you ask "what's the difference?" aha!

Richard - I think it first rolled out with the mid-year (March 2006) build date, so April 2006 would have been one month into the changeover.

FTM - from SOP though 02/2006 (Uses rotational comparison of ABS sensors)
TPM - from 03/2006 production on (with sensors in valve stem on each wheel)
By BMW announcement. I cannot be sure this was the way it actually occured.
2006 Manual MAY include both (with *) indicating you might have one or the other - but not sure if it is based on date of publication or if when first published. I do not have access to a 2006 owners manual.
Also those with MY06 may be able to chime in on what iDrive tells them in the way of TPM versus FTM and their build date.

Thanks, Dave. I believe Lord Cucamonga has a March 2006 build and he has TPM, so this conforms to my memory. Why don't you tell GeneArch so that he can correct his post. He is, after all, starting an FAQ on the board set up to serve the BMW Community.

Well, GeneArch is doing his homework. Either he came over for a visit or someone alerted him to the error of his ways. He has just posted this on his thread about FTM and TPM:
