View Full Version : Ok, now that I've thought about it...

I've had a few weeks to think about getting new wheels and few I have a couple of questions to those more experienced. I'm narrowing down the selection of new wheels to M6 replicas in the 20" size that I posted a pic of earlier from finishlinewheels.com. I know they weigh more, but will I really notice a difference in everyday driving? What tires do you recommend? What about the tire pressure monitoring system? I really like the way my car drives right now and remember that I just dumped an M Z4 coupe due to its "harshness". I'd like to keep the handling, ride and pressure system as stock as possible. I want the tires to grip well, no ice skates, but want a balance between good grip and reasonable mileage. I also like the idea of run flats and don't want to fool around with a spare. Should I just go with the 19" replicas and offload the tires and TPS from my stock rims? Does 1" make that much difference in appearance vs $$$?
BTW, here's a link if you missed the earlier thread:
http://www.finishlinewheels.com/special ... red+20%22/ (http://www.finishlinewheels.com/specials/19,BMW+5+%C1+6+SERIES/215,BMW+New+M6+Style+Staggered+20%22/)
Essentially, I just like the look of the M wheels more than my flower power ones...
Thanks, in advance, for your advice.
HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!!!
John
Lord Babyteeth - While I am not one to modify, I can tell you that changing out from runflats on the 650i to normal Michelin Sports on the M6 may have made a big difference in ride comfort - to a more comfortable ride. (Both were OEM for their respective car.) I could feel every pebble on the road with the runflats. The ride was punishing. So, unless something happened to make runflats better in the last year, you will find a better ride if you change out from them. Two things though - whatever you do be sure not to get Dunlops (very noisy and reportedly harsh) and be sure you keep your tire pressure monitor system operational. (I think the sender is around the stem area.)

Do people who don't have a spare or run flats on the M6's just hope they never get a blow out or rely heavily on the BMW road assist? Also, after checking the BMW website, I've found wheels for around $2400 for the original wheels which seemed pretty reasonable. Found PS2's on Discount and tirerack for about the same price. Getting ready to pull the trigger. Saw my first M6 in the showroom today. Love the body work and wheels, but I'm not ready for the suspension/power changes. John

I've got 20" M6 replicas non-RFT on my 650i and always carry a spare (same size, same rim and rubber) in the trunk, just in case. You never know and you definitely don't want to spend few hours waiting for the tow-truck. Ever since I removed my org. factory 19" RFT wheels off of my 6er, ride improved big time, even on 20" (and I have cheap Falkens on it right now, soon to be replaced by PS2, thanks to this forum).
Just my .02c
Hope this helps,

We pray a lot that we won't get blow outs. And pray that the BMW mobility kit (goop and air pump provided by BMW) will see us through.
What do you mean you aren't ready for the suspension and power changes? The suspension is significantly better than on the 650i.

The odds of a blow out are so low I am not even worried about it. Blow outs usually occur on tires not properly inflated or old worn tires that should have been replaced.
I think the mobility kit will work for 99% of the folks who deal with a nails, screws, or slow leaks. I have had 3, maybe 4 flats in 30 years.

That's because you have the Royal Sweepers in front of you. I had 3 explosive blowouts on my CL55, soon after I got it. I think I must have been passing a lot of constructions sites and, oh yes, I was having a barn put up at the time. It really made me gunshy and I was glad when I got runflats and an FTM. Except for the ride. :scared: And now I have a TPM, and no run flats. Mixed emoticons.

We have a lot of road debris like broken down tire rims, engine parts, etc on the roads. This causes many road hazard blowouts for West Texas drivers. Mostly damage to the sidewall in which the inflator and goop/plug just won't work. That's why I was asking the question at the beginning. I felt my M Coupe's ride was very HARSH and just assumed that the 6 was very similar. I personally like the way the 650i's ride is right now and don't want to change it up much. That's all I meant by the above comment. Also, I'm bordering on tickets daily and if it wasn't for my V1, I'd be in jail by now. John

Okay, I sprung for the wheels/tires last night. Total price was around $4300. Somewhere in a thread earlier, I thought I read around $6-7K for all of it! I must have let my memory exaggerate the $$$.
I guess by the time this is done, I'll have an M6 without the engine or suspension!
They should be here within a couple of weeks. I did get the BMW original wheels as the price wasn't that much different and they'd be easier to resell if I don't keep the car at the end of the lease. Also, the Michelin PS2's non run-flats.
Thanks again for all of your advice.

Be sure to let us know how much the ride improves. M6 wheels and PS2s are the exact combo I'm thinking about.

Sure will, but it'll probably about 3 weeks before they're on. John

Ok, got the wheels/tires installed today. Sorry I didn't wash it! I've only driven it about 5-6 miles, but it seems a little bit quieter, smoother and handling seems around the same. I haven't driven in a week or two so it's hard for me to be subjective in handling. It certainly isn't any worse. The BMW service manager told my daughter that ALL 6 series will have the M wheels for 2008 and that I wasted my money. I don't think so, but even if they did, I'm still very happy with these. Thanks again for your advice. John

The US will see two brand new wheel styles on the 6er, the 248 (18") and the 249 (19"). And the most beautiful OEM 19" wheel, the 218 (see link in my .sig ) will finally make it over the pond as well.

Now, I'm really happy with my purchase. I like the looks of all those wheels, but still like the M type more. Anything but the daisy or flower power ones I had on it before! They look pretty good, but for some reason, I just don't like them on the 6. I think the new styles will look better.
