View Full Version : Dash rattle
Gran Turismo

Lately my car has developed an intermittent, slight high-pitched dash rattle. Hard to tell if something got loose over the time or if it's just ambient temperature (summer) related. Also hard to tell where it's coming from - the most probable origin is the tach/speedo cluster, but it also could be the steering wheel column or the central vents area.
It just starts driving me :headache: as the car has been perfect so far.
Did anyone experience something similar and could provide a hint what I could tell my dealership next time I'm bringin the car in? I remember having read about some rattle issue (with SIB) with earlier models where they changed some part, but I don't think my MY07 is affected here.
My upper dash around the HUD area squeaks a little during warm weather, which is just the leather upholstery expanding around there in a compact area. I know it's leather because that's what it sounds like to me. Not concerned by it. Though yours might be a different matter. :dunno:

Thanks for the response mate, but I'd like to clarify that it's not a squeak what I'm experiencing.
Some loose cable touching the speedo/tach dial cluster from behind COULD possibly cause a similar noise to what I'm sometimes hearing... I guess that's the best description I can offer. But again, I'm not even sure if it's really emerging from that cluster.

GT I do believe there is a SIB or 2. Also if not in theSIB thecross strts in te engine compartment are supposed to be one cause. Need tightning. oh here it is. Do you need pretty copy (pdf)?
Nothing else in SIBs

SUBJECT
Rattling Noise from Center Display
MODEL
E60, E61 (5 Series Sedan and Sports Wagon) produced up to June 2007
E63, E64 (6 Series Coupe and Convertible) produced up to June 2007
SITUATION
A rattling noise may be heard from behind the center display or lower windshield area when the vehicle is driven over bumps.
CAUSE
The retaining bolts for the cross strut brace on the center support bracket or on the strut towers have worked themselves loose. In some cases, the threaded holes of the aluminum center support bracket have become damaged.
PROCEDURE
Inspect all 4 bolts which secure the cross strut brace to the body of the vehicle. 2 of the bolts (shown by the arrow) secure the brace to the center support bracket and the other 2 secure the ends of the bar to the strut towers.
If any of these bolts are loose, all 4 should be replaced with new bolts (PN 51 71 7 063 831). Torque new bolts to an increased torque specification of 27Nm.
3. If this 27 Nm torque cannot be achieved on the bolts securing the brace to the center support bracket, replace the center support bracket (PN 51 61 7 010 593) according to Repair Instruction RA 51 71 373.
